Obsidian Book Trailer

If there is one alien that can reduce to a drooling, stuttering fan-girling idiot, it is Daemon Black. Sexy, charming and drop-dead gorgeous, Daemon is made to steal hearts. And the hot Pepe Toth did a perfect job of playing Daemon in trailer. I love the chemistry between him and Sztella (of course, they are engaged, duh) which did total justice to Daemon and Katy's chemistry.

So anyway, here is the trailer. Though I would have liked if it had been longer and had more focus on the story.

Glitch (Glitch #1) by Heather Anastasiu

STORY/PLOT

In Zoel's underground world, the Community, everybody is Linked, making them devoid of emotions and personal thoughts, making them creatures of order and peace.

V-chip Linked people (Non-Glitchers)

But Zoe's different, she has started Glitching, making her capable to feel and think. And if anybody learns about her 'anomaly', she'd be re-fitted with a new V-chip, taking her freedom all over again. But there is a bigger secret that Zoe is trying to hide, her glitching has given her 'Jean Grey' kind telekinetic powers.

She thought she was alone, until she found a friend in both fellow Glichers: Max and Adrien. But this is just the beginning. Both Adrien and Max know some dirty secrets of the Uppers that might trigger the whole 'world-changing' switch on everyone. Now she they have to find a way to reach above-ground before they're caught.
(Man, I'm so bad at blurbs, but this book isn't that good either)

WARNING: Contains mild spoilers! Though I might do you a favor by saving you from 370 pages of torment, dystopian style.

The start of the book had been very promising and interesting but 50 pages into the book and it had turned a bit boring and child-like. Adrien is basically some love-struck kid, who seems more V-chip controlled than Zoe. And of course, the only shining part of his personality - the only thing that we deduce from Zoe's deduction of him - is his shining 'beautiful aquiline eyes'. I mean author is so constantly obsessing over it, it feels like Zoel is crushing over his eyes rather than Adrien himself. Got beautiful eyes? I LOVE YOU. Ugh.

Max had seemed just the dream guy in the first place, but like every other character he decided to go and blow every single bit of my expectations up.

 

My Expectations

You know, since it seems all he is concerned for is getting laid, typical jock mentality fast-fowarded into a dystopian society. But he's still better than the lovey-dovey Adrien. Even with his "Can I see your genitalia?" comment. Oh, yes, you read right. He did say that. As if that perverted comment wasn't enough to make me cringe, the following image \/ \/ \/ popped into my dirty mind of its own account.

Ugh... *shudders*

I don't think I recovered after that. This book just went downhill from there. Oh, because Adrien had decided to butt his lovey-dovey aqua-marine ass back more frequently.

And did I mention the scary Chancellor, who intimidated and indirectly threatened Zoe was actually - shocker - the bad person.

 At least the train scene was good. If only the author could have killed off Zoel just after she saved the young girl at the market, Max after his delighting entry (the only delighting thing about him in the whole book) and Adrien anytime before he lost his heart - *cough* balls *cough* to a girl he didn't knew much about.

What.Is.Bloody.Happening.

Though character development was mostly nil, the plot itself was alright, a bit irritating and at times unclear. This story had the potential to be so much more. The characters too, but the author made them so unrealistic. Adrien was too good and too soft, especially when the author wanted him to have a hard past, which didn't make sense in my opinion. How could he have been alone when there were people out in Rez? So you can say, Rez and above-ground were concepts quite unclear to me.

 

Me, halfway through the book

The author kept mentioning uneeded usless things to fill up the spaces between the main scenes. And most of the main scenes didn't even seem that significant. This story drastically failed to pull me in. It felt like some teenager wrote this, hell I have even read teenagers write better. Take it from me, the Wattpad junkie, that I have read better.

The author has such an interesting blog and website, the cover is abso-freaking-lutely gorgeous, the idea really cool (I just can't get over how badly the author went Friday the 13th on this) but the story just couldn't interest me.

There were times I was absolutely intrigued, but these moments went just as they came.

I wouldn't have been hard on this story, if I hadn't been anticipating this book for months all the while holding high expectations. Glitch had been such a wonderful idea and Heather Anastasiu just effing bazooka-ed it.

There was one person who I actually appreciated and that was Adrien's mother. She just won my heart with this line - Your teenage hormones and overactive imagination have made you obsessed [with Zoe].

MEET THE MAIN CHARACTERS (OR THROTTLE-MEs) OF GLITCH 


Warning: I just couldn't get Adrien's 'shunting', 'cracking' and 'godlam'd' curses off my frigging mind, so the further post will subject you some weird-ass curses mentioned again and again like some nursery rhyme sung by people hooked on crack set on repeat.

MAXIMIN (THE RESIDENT PERVERT)

 

Max on any normal day with Zoe

The only character I believed had the potential to be so much more was Max. But the author was so busy antagonizing him as selfish, not right for and obsessed with Zoe  his personality came across as one-faceted. Max could have had so many layers and a different depth to his kinda deranged mind, enough to make one confused whether to like him or not. Which then would have made sense when Zoe thought of him as her best friend.

If I ever unfortunately cross paths with Max:

Oh, Maximin, you shunting godlam'd bastard, you broke my heart. You were the only one I dared have expectations for and you shuntin' broke it with your irritating, animalistic act. Your characterization was just painful. You were pretty sweet when you had no emotions or at least acting like it.

Max, can't get the girl? Get someone else godlam'd pregnant! That'll surely have your woman running at you like some guy who has just dumped half-a-bottle of Axe on himself. Shunting genius! No, it was sarcasm, you jerk!

Also, Zoe doesn't want you, SO WHAT?! That doesn't mean you would shrug off the responsibility of a teenager you got pregnant, give up your chance to ever get to above ground and get cracking mind-controlled by a glitching maniac all over again, even after she got you badly beaten and forced you to hit your head with your own bloody fist.

Note: I don't get why anybody would let Max go back, knowing he could be easily manipulated by the Chancellor again, risking the information about Rez's secret escape routes, the manual overdrives that still worked and the new extent of Zoe's powers.

ZOE (THE MARY SUE OF DYSTOPIAN WORLD)

Though a huge part of this book was about Zoe coming to terms with her overwhelming emotions, sadly I couldn't feel those emotions. Which made Zoe a difficult character to connect with. Most of the time Zoe was alone, confused and in danger to be caught, yet I couldn't feel the fear, helplessness, struggle for control and loneliness that Zoe was supposedly feeling. I also couldn't feel the chemistry between Zoe and Adrien, and Zoe's love for her brother Markan. It felt like Zoe was tied by a feeling of responsibilty to her younger brother instead of her love for him.

If I ever bummed into Zoel (the following occurs after a cracking awesome kick, ninja-style from my part) :

I know it's not been long since you'd been glitching but doesn't that mean you should be assaulted by emotions after shunting emotions? The only time you felt real was when you realised you had led to your own older brother's deactivation. And really, after getting all your precious emotions to yourself, all you can mostly see in Adrien is his godlam'd blue-green eyes? Plus, you irritate the hell out of me. But, don't worry, not as much as the boys. Still most of the time I ran through your babble on Adrien only lodging "aquiline blah blah blah intense green blah blah blah aquamarine blah blah blah most of all his eyes drew me in blah blah blah his eyes." Oh, shut up. Is there nothing more to a guy than his eyes?

Adrien and Zoel's love story

Zoe, don't be a hard-ass! Everything isn't about you and Adrien. Which is highly irritating since most of the time all you babbled about was saving everyone. Bullshit! When Max tried to escape with you, you put him in danger and got yourself caught over some gooey feeling in your stomach for a guy who betrayed you. You just started feeling and understanding emotions and suddenly you're in love! You can't even godlam'd describe it, you didn't even knew what sorry meant. Max gave you such a strong proof and still you tried to deny the truth and even thought to find him before your embarrassing, infamous capture. You just infuriate me, you shallow piece of rusted V-chip! 

ADRIEN (THE LOVE-STRUCK ASS-ACHE WHO USES 'ANOMALOUS' CURSE WORDS)

Adrien, you godlam'd son of a shunt. If Max is an animal, you are just a shallow, migraine of a human. You simply have no depth to inrigue me. And I believe it's the book's mistake that you couldn't show us the needed life. But then, who told you to fall in love with a godlam'd girl you only know for few shunting hours? I know there was a shortage of teenage girls in Rez, that doesn't mean you have to go all Edward Cullen on the first girl who shows some interest in you. Especially since, he's a leech and you don't even shuntin' sparkle (which is creepy). So seriously man, grow some godlam'd balls.

"You made me realize I'd taken for granted how beautiful life can be." Adrien to Zoe, a few hours after they met for the first time (most of during which Zoe was screaming, hyper-ventilating and passed out).

Adrien, I don't know what all you've suffered and all that pain you've felt and all the people you've watched fall apart. But it's not my shunting fault that you forgot to mention it! And how do you fall in love with a girl you barely know, and who has some very strong feelings for a guy who is obsessed with her! (Ok, here I go again, but seriously, this is like the Twilight of dystopians, and Twilight doesn't hold any fond memory for me, oh except me throwing the book at my bro.)

PROFANITY WORD COUNT (I dedicate the following observation to Adrien, his curse-words helped me make this review PG13) 

No, it's not, hot Supernatural guy.

I counted how many times Adrien unnecessarily used profanities (Just the same three ones repeated over and over like a dam of worse-ever curses broke and the took Adrien in a flood until I wanted to strangle him with a piece of wire whenever he used them).

Oh, for the love of the god! I can't decide whether to review the book or gloat incessantly over the freaking blinding drool-worthy glory of Daemon! *sigh* I'm so not against an alien invasion right now.

In Obsidian,
When Katy was dragged to West Virginia, the last thing she expected was to have an extremely, making-you-endlessly-sigh hot Daemon Black for a neighbor.

She wouldn't have minded if he hadn't been an arrogant jerk, especailly of the extra-terrestrial kind. Oh yes, Daemon is an alien. As if that wasn't enough, he has her glowing like the fourth of July with his searing touch. He might as well had her stand on her pedestal with a huge board screaming, "The Luxens are here! With me, a human!". Now not only she has to put up with him, but also trust him to keep her safe. Kind of hard, since their conversations are never truly done without a finger from one end.

“How long have you been standing there?"
"Just long enough to see you give Daemon the middle finger."
"He deserved it.”

Jennifer L. Armentrout has presented a fresh albeit a very sexy take on aliens. Daemon Black is anything but forgettable. The moment he entered, I knew he was gonna stay, like in the depths of my fluttering heart and dirty mind ;)

Arrogant, cocky, leave-you-a-drooling-mess hot, wittingly sarcastic, charmingly uncaring and master of come-backs, Daemon Black is the ultimate of bad boy.

Might be the reason Katy and I can't our hands off him. Or in my case, my mind off him.

There are so many dialogues by Daemon that I want to use here but since violating copyrights is not my hobby, i'll mention my favorite non-spoilery few:

“You look like you got more of a bath than the car. I never thought washing a car would be so hard, but after watching you for the last fifteen minutes, I’m convinced it should be an Olympic sport.”

He won my heart with this line

“I bet you think things through, right? Accept candy
from strangers and get into vans with a sign that reads free Kittens?” He's got the body and the brains. Dammit, makes me think:

This was just funny,

“Remind me," he paused, drawing in a stuttered gasp, "to never piss you off again. Christ, are you secretly a ninja?”

The chemistry between Katy and Daemon kept me on the edge of my seat most of the times. Talk about I can't keep my eyes - or hands, for that matter - off you. Sparks flew everywhere, blowing up things, intense jade eyes electrifying, tingling touches. And man, i'm talking in literal sense.

"He lowered his head until the edges of his dark curls brushed my cheek. I was caught between wanting to crawl into my locker and crawl into him."

CRAWL INTO HIM KATY! OR I WILL!

Katy though an interesting character, couldn't actually make any kind of impact on me. Yeah, she was hilariously sarcastic, which would have been enough to call her my deity, but Katy lacked a certain luster that made her not-so-memorable. Though some her lines were dearly so.
For example:

“Beautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. It was the holy trinity of hot boys.”

Yup, that one is a genius.
OR,

“The day my internet was hooked up was better than having a hot guy check out my butt and ask for my phone number.”

I agree. Great minds think alike B)

As for the plot, it felt a bit weak and cliched. I mean the idea was really good, the characters were fantastic and the book had its kick-ass moments but the story alone wasn't that great. It is fair to say Daemon alone made it worth it. Oh, and the chemistry between him and Katy.

Nearly two years since being diagnosed , Ana is at last going to be joined with Jasper Taurell - a guy she has a crush on since she was eleven. Jasper was also the only one who could save her from being condemned to the City. Everything was on path of being right until Jasper disappeared days before their joining ceremony. A journey to save Jasper takes Ana out of her safe Community and into the City of Crazies. The Glimpse weaves a tale of betrayal, love, politics and lies as Ana uncovers some truths that are going to change her, and everything else, forever.

The Glimpse was an enticing, controversial, complicated, witty, intriguing, uncensored, smartly-written, mysterious, dark, brain-racking, fast-pacing, lovely, captivating book. It is certainly a genre of its own. Looking at the cover, one can expect a light contemporary which is is totally opposite of what The Glimpse is - A heavy, complicated dystopian.

Claire Merle is a genius. She has crafted an amazing story of a smart-witted and independent girl who tries to find logic in the chaos created by the Crazies and Pures alike. She has wonderfully mixed political elements with mystery and teen angst and frustration to create a story that'll leave you turning pages long after the book has finished. But the problem - it actually took around 140 pages (out of the total 422) to actually to pull me in and intrigue me. Before that, it seemed a bit boring.

Ana is a bold, strong, assessing, determined and logical character. She simply won't believe what everybody says and questions everything rightfully. Ana is also no love-struck, vulnerable girl. She might seem weak, but then to be kick-ass you don't need to know how to pack a punch, but she's a really strong character. Ana is increbily smart and you can see that in the court scene. Leaving Community behind to venture into an unknown City, shows how brave and independent she is. All the while, she comes across as an lonely, rebellious and realistic teen. She is certainly one of my favorite heroines.

The more deeper I get into the book, the relationship of Ariana and Jasper becomes clearer. In my opinion, it is no way love between them. It feels like they barely know each other, which is exactly the truth. I loved Cole and Ana's chemistry. The scene where they play music from digital colors was my favorite. But individually, Cole and Jasper came across as shallow characters, which is one of the reasons why I couldn't give this book the perfect five rating. Though Lila was a wonderful addition to the story.

Ashby, Ana's father, is a very intriguing character and complicated character. At first, he is uncaring, then all about reputation, after that he is hell-bent on saving his daughter, then she's a precious possession. He loves her, that is clear but he rather keep her keep caged without her wishes than give her the freedom that she needs to be really alive. Because in the end, her freedom is his downfall. And Ashby is dillusioned when it comes to that. The world will be thrust to chaos and anarchy without the society indiscriminantly divided into Pures and Crazies. I think that is one of Claire Merle's messages: No one is crazy or depressed. People make them like that. The percentage of kids taking anti-depressant pills is shockingly increasing, The Glimpse is just an example of what might possibly rest in the future.

The actual idea of Glimpse and the Enlightenment Project was interesting but I didn't like the fact that the author didn't elaborate on it much. I had so many expectations from Cole's Glimpse but when time came for that, it kinda fell flat for me. Many threads were left loose in the end which I hope the author would look after in the sequel.

Other short musings:
- The interface idea is a genius, completely loved it. Though a little confusing in the beginning.
- The Three Mills scenes are at best chilling. The horrific reality of it would shock you to the core.
- I don't know why, but the part of the book set in the community gave me a little gothic-victorian vibe.
- Courtroom scene is one hell of a scene. One of my favorites.

I can't wait for The Fall, the sequel to Glimpse, to release in 2013. Glimpse is surely one of the best books I've read in 2012.

Seventeen year-old Cinder had always wanted to be accepted by her step-mother but now all she wants is to escape. But nothing is so simple in life of a cyborg like her. Leutomosis, blue fever, is spreading and a cure seems a dream and now Cinder's only human friend and step-sister, Peony, has the plague. Blamed yet again for something she didn't commit, Cinder is forcefully sent to the palace labs to be experimented on for a cure. Nothing goes as expected. Cinder is suddenly more unique than she ever believed and is crushing on a prince, who will only be reviled by her truth. But most of all, the only way to save the country is her. Could she do that in time?

I could see remains of my blown-up mind whenever I picked up this book. Cinder is definitely one of the best books of 2012. Intricately woven and expertly written, Cinder drew me in from the first page itself. The protagnist was a strong, head-on and kick-ass character. She wasn't the one to just give up and she always put up a fight. A hilarious sarcastic side was another wonderful trait of Cinder's.

“I don't know. I don't actually remember anything from before the surgery."

His eyebrows rose, his blue eyes sucking in all the light of the room. "The cybernetic opetation?"

"No, the sex change."

The doctor's smile faltered.

"I'm joking.”

Cinder is an extremely great mechanic and her brain wiring keeps her connected to world at all times through internet. THAT IS SO COOL. Cinder's cyborg side was very engaging as it left me wondering it's extent. Cinder was definitely one hell-of-a-character.

Now, let's get to my new fictional crush, PRINCE KAI ❤❤❤
He was lovely and sweet and charming and captivating and endearing and charming and every other word in a thesaurus that means charming. Besides being utterly, irresistibly charming, Kai proved to be a great leader, too. Even though things weren't going his way, he made choices that put his kingdom before him. Really made me proud of the boy. Plus, he can be pretty honest, too.

“That you prefer to rule through fear rather than justice? So sorry, Your Majesty, I’m afraid I already knew that about you.”

But most memorable character, in my opinion, is Iko. Even though she was an android, she was particularly lively and effervescent. Also, she totally managed to add to the fan-girl moments which Cinder refused to admit. If you aren't already expecting, an example:

“Oh, my stars! Think about Prince Kai! You could dance with Prince Kai!”
This made Cinder pause and squint into Iko’s blinding light. “Why would the prince dance with me?”
Iko’s fan hummed as she sought an answer. “Because you won’t have grease on your face this time.”

And she's choosy and totally girly as well, like:

"Plus, I’m not getting in this thing. There’s probably decades’ worth of rat droppings under those seats.”

That's a lot of personality for an android. Certainly more than a certain frigid girl *cough*Sella Bwan*cough* in love with a dead, sparkly guy.

Overall, Cinder was completely enthralling and riveting. Thank you, Marissa Meyer for such an AWESOME book like Cinder. The sequel Scarlet releases in 2013. SO FREAKING LONG!!!. Frozen in cryo-sleep, Amy is on her way to a new planet, three hundred years apart from Earth. Three hundred years that would rip her away from her love, her friends and her home. All because when she would wake up, she would still be with her parents. But she's awake now, way ahead of her time. She is suddenly trapped in between metal walls, underneath a fake sky and a light bulb for sun, ruled by an evil tyrant called Eldest. Her only hope, 49 years and 266 days away. But the mystery has just begun. Amy, now with Elder, the rebellious teen heir of Eldest, races on to find the person who attempted to murder her and succeeded in doing another before he snatches away the people Amy holds dear the most: her parents. Utterly intoxicating and heart-racing, this part dystopian and part sci-fi thriller will take the mystery to a whole new level.



I loved it! Beth Revis totally needs a salute! A total sci-fi one!







I loved the writing. Ms.Revis let the words flow their way and were sometimes almost poetic in semblance.

Example: “This is the secret of the stars, I tell myself. In the end, we are alone. No matter how close you seem, no one else can touch you.”



Beth Revis made me go through everything Amy and Elder went through. I could almost feel myself claustrophobic like Amy, stuck in a dilemma whether Amy should awaken her parent and whether life of lies is better than the harsh truth of being stuck. I also could see the koi fish painting in my mind which was very beautifully described.





It was certainly not of those books where you could guess what would happen next because Ms. Revis makes us suffer with her characters and creates a story that you don't want to put your hands off.



My favorite character was Harley, the moment he appeared was the moment he completely drew me in. As the story further progressed and I learned more of Harley, the more I liked him. He was certainly the most likable character. SPOILER ALERT: I almost cried and screamed "NO!" when Harley had opened the latch and had launched off into space. I had wished long after that Beth Revis does something freaky time magic kind of thing and make Harley come back.

“And I look at Harley, and the billions of stars are in his eyes, and he's drinking them up, pouring them into his soul.”

Oh Harley...



Amy was tough, brave, sensible and yet a daddy's girl at heart. Her sacrifice for her parents in the start of the book, the realization of all that she has lost and the urge to fight back made Amy a worthy heroine.



Elder was easy to like, as well. I could almost understand his dilemma when it came to the Eldest and i, myself, was unable to decide when it came to the ultimate question of what was right and what was wrong.



In the end:

“The glitter in the sky looks as if I could scoop it all up in my hands and let the stars swirl and touch one another but they are so distant so very far apart that they cannot feel the warmth of each other even though they are made of burning.”
